Announcing The Line Up for Them Threes!

The line up of Group Three sees a record number (it sure seems that we are breaking/making a lot of Extravaganza records this year!) of rookies—fourteen in number, each of whom are now in their final packing stages to travel to Missoula this coming Saturday (with an advance party of two Houstonians coming a day early to assure their timely debut), just under 48 hours from now.

Leading the way and providing guidance to the fledgling group of Extravaganzers are long time veterans Ladd “Da Litigator” Bedford and his beautiful bride “Missouri Kristine” (so named because, when we/they first traveled to the Missouri River in 2008, “Missouri” was quick to ask if, in addition to a Montana fishing license, we also needed a Missouri license!) who are joined for almost just as many years by Mechanic’s Bank newly appointed head of corporate banking Scott “Crack” McAdams (so named for the picture that adorns Headquarters’ living room [given to us as a gift {?!?} from Crack’s E-fishing father-in-law] showing the back side of Crack wearing a pair of the fishing pants we gave away a few years ago, yes, crack included!)

Also joining in the mix from Sun Valley, Idaho, are multi-year returnees Grady “GQ” Garrett and his wonderful now-bride (they only dated for 24 years before getting married 18 months ago!) “Grinnin’ Penny” Shawback—yes, as they always do, them two of the Threes will be Moose Room residents again….and, additionally, now two-timing returnee Ann “Killer” Flynn will arrive on Saturday with her mother Geraldine and brother Ed in tow, all of the above having the solemn duty and responsibility (a) to take control of the rest of their rookie fishing mates and (b) at the same time look squarely in the eye(s) the performance of their recently departed Ones and Twos.

And, you ask, just who the rest of the rookie Threes are??  Well, it is primo, star-studded cast of (a) world renowned winemaker Richard “RDLR” de los Reyes who as his fishing partner has chosen singularly known and talented Paul “Heel” Miller; (b) my wonderful Houston-based former law partner “Gentleman Jim” Carmody who has as his sidekick guru Houston realtor Martin “Maddog” O’Malley; and (c) north Bay CPA Rodger “Doctor” Schuester returns from a recent Fall Fling to attend his first Extravaganza along with his new bride Susan “Mrs. Doctor” Schuester [yes, there IS a story there!]; and (d) my brother Kers {who designed, will first see, and be resident in our wonderful Blackfoot house} who comes with virtually the entirety of his estate plan:  his wife Kathy, daughters Katie and BJ (the former accompanied by her husband David “Skipper” Levy and the latter by her beau “Beau Ben” O’Hearn as well as with his Brickyard cove neighbor Kjeld “Cal” Hestehave and his escort “Merlot Diane”.

And there will be mystery and surprise guests joining the Threes over on the Mo—including a repertoire from our dear friends at Sweetgrass Rods (the world’s premier bamboo rod makers), former head of Montana Fish Wildlife and Parks, Jeff Hagener and guest (Jeff being the current Montana Wildlife Federation Development Director) and, get this, a last night’s private in-Headquarters performance by Montana Matters; inimitable Bob Wire.

And speaking of wires, we are down to the last one of those for E-11 as the Threes rev it up and begin working their way(s) to Extravaganzaland!!

Bring it on Threes!!

FW: The Came, They Fished, They Conquered!!

A salute to Da Twos from one One:

  Hi Ron

Thanks for the report! This group would of made Napolean shudder in his boots.
Sending good thoughts and a prayer your way.

Steve the man Manfre

Thank You

A nice thank you note from Group Two’s nee rookie Joe “Compari” Ciatti:

 Hi Ron,

What a tremendous trip. The fishing was great and it was fun to be with such an outgoing energetic group, and a treat for me to

have time to catch up with my nephew Brad. Thanks again for the wonderful food, drinks, gifts and entertainment. The memories

will stay with me forever.

I really respect your feelings and love for Montana and hope, when the dust settles, to get together with you again and to introduce

you to my partners.

All the best with the Threes and take care of my old partner Richard de los Reyes.

Best regards,

Joe (Campari)

FW: Extravaganze #2

A(nother) nice note from Beach Transportation’s “Commander Cliff” who successfully navigated The Trout Tub for Group One, the Extravaganza Express for Da Tattoos and who will be commander-in-coach for Dem Threes!

  Ron:

Once again thanks for your generosity following Extravaganza #2.  That is a large tip and I will continue to do all I can from my end in giving you my best service.

I truly enjoyed every part of the experience.  They were a great group.  I just talked with Josh who confirmed the next gig.  Thanks for requesting me for Extravaganza #3.

I'll look forward to seeing you Sunday-Tuesday (July 3-5) next week.

Best wishes

Cliff

The Came, They Fished, They Conquered!!

All hail to the Mighty Twos who, like no other group in Extravaganza (surpassing even E-11’s Ones) history, came to Extravaganzaland and, on their Extravaganza Express, traversed the Continental Divide six (count ‘em) times [as did the Ones and as so will do the Threes] to fish the mighty Missouri with results that, by any standards, are simply stunning.

The prior record for trout entrants onto the all-Extravaganza Twenty Inch Board was Group One’s 23 twenty plus inchers—by the end of Day Two of the Tattoos fishing, they had racked up 20 such pescadors and, by the end of the tale of Da Twos, that number soared to 35 twenty inchers (the Twos landing 15 new entrants during their Day Three of fishing alone—a number which is the historical average for ALL groups in any one fishing year) and all of this when the Mo was at its mightiest, flowing at a record-pacing 21,800 cubic feet per second (twice the flow for the Ones and making the fish twice as hard to locate and land).

Bravo, bravo, bravo, Tattoos—indeed, you came, you fished and, like no other group on Extravaganza history (until the incoming Threes, that is!) you conquered all that was to be seen, cast to and netted!!

Shown above are the “big sticks” of the Tattoos—the yellow shirt winners of the best of the best, all, except for the “Rock Star” in the back that is, landing 22 inchers.  Shown from left to right in the first row are Ralph “Red Baron” McLeran next to Lori “Fawn Lady” Ware and “Will The Thrill” Burke.  As to Joe “Rock Star” Samillano in the back row, well, for the first time in Extravaganza history, he landed a Walleye pike on a fly (now small feat, I might add).  Homeward bound on the Two’s motor coach, The Extravaganza Express, a heated debate imparted for what seemed like 100 miles of the 165 mile journey as just what to do with this errant finned beast.  At the conclusion of brisk and emotional discussion (the starboard side of the bus was assigned the task to argue “for the pike” and the port side to the contrary), the conclusion of the Tattoos was to allow “Rock Star” to register his 30” pike on the Twenty Inch board, making the total total of Dem Twos 36 20+inchers, but that he should be awarded his own separate Yellow Shirt, creating the first ever Pike Category for Yellow Shirts—a decision that will live in future Extravaganza.

The Twos also set a picture-taking record, posting (via me) 1,136 [count ‘em!] pics to the E-11’s picture cloud site, many of which are coming your way pronto!!

Best to all in the mid-aftermath of the beauty of it all,

Rock Creek Ron

EXTRAVAGANZA EXPRESS!!

The "Extravaganza Express" has been traveling to and from the Missouri, express shuttling Group Two for all three days of fishing!  Credit for its name goes to Group Two's Shanna "Banana" Rodgers.  Thanks, Shanna!!

Father And Son Reunion!

Check out the attached pics, all:  father Marius Burke (photo #1) holds a 21 ½” Missouri rainbow only the be superseded by son Will’s 22” Mobow, capping the biggest of the big fish Day Two of the Tattoos on the Missouri River where Da Twos (get this) caught (and released) twelve (12) 20”+ fish, bringing their two day total of twenty inchers to (really get this) an all group-setting record of twenty (only three fish shy of Da E-11’s Ones’ then all-Extravaganza record setting 23 fish performance just a week earlier).

Day Two big sticks included twenty inchers caught and released by (a) each of the husband and wife combo of Bobby and Kelley Kingsland, (b) Ken Snider, and (c) Shanna Rodgers, plus two twenty inchers caught by Joe Ciatti plus three twenties caught by each of Doug Hamilton and Tom Thornhill (all nicknames being intentionally deleted in reverence of their accomplishment[s]).

Watch for an update on what happens tomorrow on the Tattoos Day Three, as the Mighty Mo is gonna be flowing at its all time record high rate of discharge—something that simply didn’t seem to phase Dem Twos during today’s high flow.

As for the Threes, with legendary water yet in the mountain climes and with 80-90 degree weather predicted for the next two days, it is now all but certain that Da Threes will have the same experience as their predecessors by fishing the Missouri River.  As was well put by long time Extravaganza veteran Tim Rodgers tonite after two days on the Mo, “I will go back to the Missouri River any and every chance that I get.”

Viva la Extravaganza!

RCR

p.s. Threes:  Be on the watch for special informational alerts from Patty in the next few days and from me post-Group Two, as, for the first time ever, the fishing is so good on the Mo that even I am going back tomorrow for a third day of fishing!

Catch 22's

RCR and guide/outfitter John “The Great But Propaneless” Gould and Ralph “Red Baron” McLeran with his guide par excellence Nick Stipich with their co-trophy 22 inchers caught (and released) on Group Two’s Day One of fishing Da Mo!!

RCR

Group Two's Extavaganza Express Rides to Da Mo!

As shown above, Beach Transportation courtesy of (now tattooed) Commander Cliff was the mode of transportation for Da Twos today, who journeyed to the Mo and, by the end of the day, had landed 8 [count ‘em] 20”+ wild trout, all but one of which were rainbows.  The day saw the Mighty Mo running at twice the volume as it was for Da Ones—an increase from 10,500 cfs to over 21,000cfs—a near record Mo flow!

Tom “Sockeye” Thornhill signed into the Twenty Inch Club board along with Tim “Squawfish” Rodgers and his daughter Alia “Snowflake” and child sitter Gisela “Yella” the latter two being awarded honorary yellow hats for their fishing prowess but giving way to Ralph “Red Baron” McLeran’s [get this] three 20”+ fish, the larger 22” of which earned him the Yellow Hat Award of the day, with Rock Creek Ron demurring his own 22” bow to bestow the honors, RCR also catching (and releasing) a(nother) 20 ½ Mobow (see separate posting).

All of the Twos fished well in record high flows on the Mo and are now safely headed for their bunks with visions of Twenty Inchers safely ensconced in their mental hard drives!

Best to all from the fast and furious scene of it all,

RCR

p.s. Threes:  we will make the call as to where you will be fishing on Wednesday—right now it is 50/50 between the Mo and The Root.

Da Tattoos!!

They’ve arrived and so with them there went the neighborhood!!

Thanks For All you Do!

An embarrassingly warm and nice note from Montana Wildlife Federation president “Tall Tim” Aldrich:

Hi Ron.  I hope the rest of Group One's 2011 Extravaganza experiences went as well as did day one. They were a great group of individuals having a great time.  As we remarked early and often on Father's Day, it was a beautiful memory generating day on the Mo!  I thank you sincerely for making me your guest on that Day One of 2011.  You are a generous and much appreciated host.  You were a bit more delicate in delivering constructive criticism than was Tyler when I fished with him a couple years ago.  His was all by action and I, while in the rear perch got to watch it all unfold--not a word spoken but a message well delivered!  My elbow is nearly recovered and my "honorary yellow hat" was displayed while fishing on Brown's Lake on Tuesday with Dale Bosworth and his lovely wife.

Carol and I look anxiously to the 4th and the Extravaganza Celebration at the Clausen Rock Creek Retreat.  Until then, fish well my friend and enjoy the moments with the great folks you bring to Montana to refresh their memories of what it is that makes Montana Matter.  Thanks again for all you do.  tim

Onederfulness!

Thanks Chris “Rock” Richards!

Good Morning Ron,

Hope you have had some rest.  I'm still on the Montana high.....flight home was great.  I wanted to get the full names of Kathy's sister and the other ladies who did a wonderful job with the meals.  I'm going to send each a small gift.  Have a good time with the next group (after reading your latest email it sounds like that won't be a problem).  You did a fantastic job and Thank you!

Hugs

Chris

Commander Cliff Checks in!

A special note form Commander Cliff, driver of The Trout Tub for Da Ones—by popular demand CC will also navigate for the Tattoos and I am not really sure he knows just what (tattoos0 he is in for!

I just wanted to thank you for your generous tip following the fishing expedition.  I really had a great time being your driver and hope I have the opportunity to drive for you again.

Best Montana wishes to you,

Cliff

AKA  "Commander Cliff"

Onederfulness!

And an equally nice note from now-veteran Steve “The man” Manfree:

Good morning Ron

Thanks again for the honor of participating in the Extravaganza 11.

Fly fishing boot-camp with such a prestigious and accomplished group

of individuals is something I never imagined would be possible for me.

Happy Hunting
Best regards
Steve the Man Manfre

Da Ones

A nice note from Group One Brian "Moraine" Shepard:

Hi Ron , we all made it back . Thanks again for the great time, you all
pulled it off again. Your team is like the sweetgrass bamboo, bending with
the winds and becoming stronger .

Thank you from the Ortolano -Shepards

Announcing the Line Up for Group Two!!

With an all-star cast of multi-year returning veterans, Da Twos (also known as the Tattoos for their Circle C tattooing propensities!) will return to The Mighty Missouri River, just as they did during the last high water year of 2008, to see if they can meet, match and/or beat the huge harvest of 20 inch wild trout that the Ones feasted on (with their cameras, only that is!).

Flying in privately is eight year veteran Doug “Popeye” Hamilton who will serve as navigator to three year returning veteran Ralph “Red Baron” McLeran who will be piloting their two seater craft (with Popeye’s luggage already headed this way in advance via UPS).  Popeye’s fishing partner will be two time(er?!?) and 2008 E veteran Ken “Mo Fish” Snider whose bride was and still is prominently portrayed in our Extravaganza movie (he being chided on more than one occasion during the movie by letting his rookie-to-fly-fishing wife [drastically] outfish him while on (and off) camera).  Da Baron will be fishing with his brother Brian “Deer Me” McLeran [who, post E-09, tangled his motorcycle with a deer headed out of town and now, courtesy of wife Laura, now flies commercially] and Deer Me, in turn, will be fishing with his rookie son Marc with each of their trips being generously purchased at Montana Matter’s Napa Concert, with all proceeds of their purchase(s) going to that great and worthy cause [see www.montanamatters.com ].

And then, again, there again goes the neighborhood with the (rapidly) growing Tim “Squawfish” Rodgers boatloads of fisherfolk, the headliner of which is Napa’s inimitable pre-school guru Lori “Fawn Lady” Ware (who asks if we have enough tattoos for their group---yes we do, Fawn Lady!) who, with her fishing sidekick “Shanna Banana” Rodgers, has yet to see a river that she cannot bring to its knees.  Well, Dynamic Duo, this year’s runoff calls for extra duty which will be provided by the Rodgers’ two veteran fishing gals, CT and Snowflake, otherwise known in real life as Mardy and Alia.

Whine not, Tattoos, because, as always, you are accompanied by wine greatness, not only by the reputation of Squawfish’s Walsh Vineyards Management, but also by the presence of Parducci Wine’s long time returning veteran Tom “Sockeye” Thornhill [so named for his Alaskaganza pranks] and rookie Joe Ciatti of Ciatti Co (gee, I wonder how that wine powerhouse company got its name!), not to mention (honorably) first time Extravaganzer Brad Miller (nephew of Joe, each of whom have yet to earn their E name), the latter of whom has (very) successfully segued from wine to pomegranate, being co-owner of Stiebs, LLC, now one of the largest pomegranate distributors in the world.

Not to be outdone by Sonapa vintages, the w[h]iners again will be accompanied by returning (from Florida, no less) contractors Bobby “Da King” Kingsland and his beautiful bride “Windy” Kelley (so named by her last Extravaganza’s first day complaining about the wind on the Bitterroot, only to see her not only see but realize yellow the following two days) and Joe “Da Man” Samillano and his (far) better half Tracie of yet to be determined E-11 naming.

Rounding out the scorecard for Da Twos is returning veteran Will “The Thrill” Burke who this year brings as his guest his dad Marius and long-time Extravaganzers “Down River Dave” Studeman and his wonderful spouse Lynn “Mighty Mini” Turnbull.

What a line up, folks---you Wonderful Ones out there better keep a close eye on Der Blog (if and when I ever get time to post to it, that is) to see if your Twenty Inch Club record holds water for, as with Der Ones, “to the Mo go the Tattoos.”

Best to all from the glorious scene of it all,

Rock Creek Ron

Errate From a Man who Knows

Group Three go-be-honored guest Jeff Hagener (former head of Montana’s Department of Fish, Wildlife and Game, no less!) weighs in with the following technical correction:

Noted that at least one of the boats for a day out of your group one had a very good day with big fish!

Being a biologist in background, I have to point out one small technicality to your “Five Easy Twenties” dialogue.  You congratulated the fisherman on over 100” of native Montana trout.  Technically, neither rainbows nor browns are native trout to MT.  They are both wild trout as MT FWP does not (and has not for many years) stocked rivers and streams with fish, rather those waterways are dependant on natural reproduction.

Jeff

Picky, picky, picky, Jeff—100 inches for five fish in one day is still 100 amazing inches!!

RCR

Ones for Twenty (Inch Club Board, that is!)

Single handedly, like no other group in the Extravaganza’s now 9 year history, the Wonderful Ones absolutely spanked E’11’s Twenty Inch Club board, shown above with, separately, Brian “Moraine” Shepard and son Josef “Fear The Beard” Shepard signing in along with lefty “Jimmy The Meek” Hagle.  The Ones registered as single-group Extravaganza record of  23 Twenty inch fish during their three days fishing Da Mo, which tallied up as 18 in the 20” category, 4 in the 21 inch category and 1 (The Ghost’s 22” Yellow Shirt winning brown) in the 22 inch category.

Another all-E record was set by The Ghost and The Meek boating 5 twenty inch plus fish on a single day!!!!  Now that is some day of fishin’ guys!!

Whaddayasay, Tattoos???  Can you meet or beat this??   Well, you will have your fair shot as all three of Da Two’s fishing days are now slated for the Mighty Missouri River.

RCR

Five Easy Twenties

Get this gang:  One day, one boat, five (yes 5) 20”+ fish as shown above—two 20’s, a 20 ½, a 21 ½ , and a 22…can you tell which one is which.  Well, I can tell you the guy with the trio is Group One’s Yellow Shirt winner, multi-year veteran Demetry “The Ghost” Kondrasheff, and his sidekick is (get this) a rookie, “Jimmy The Meek” Hagle.

Congrats both—let’s see, with just part of your day’s catch (and release) you topped out over 100” in native Montana trout—an all-time Extravaganza record!!
